good morning. we will be sitting in this morning for willie geist. this is "way too early," it's not necessarily better than one. >> we're glad you're up with us this morning. listen, shoot us an e-mail at waytooearly@msnbc.com. something like that. we're going to read your best responses later in the show. the next 30 minutes will be your cram session. a lot going on today including new numbers from the campaigns that suggest this could cost $2 billion, that's billion with a "b." plus "sports illustrated" asks current nfl players who the
5:31 am
most overrated players are among them. let's just say this list not good for the new york jets. >> we'll also let louis give it another try. first, let's get to the news. a huge portion of the east coast is prepare iing for what forecasters are calling a major threat as hurricane sandy barrels north. the storm is packing sustained winds of 85 miles an hour. its path is still uncertain, but sandy could make landfall as a category one hurricane early next week. that means new york city and the mid-atlantic could be in for heavy rains, flooding and significant damage. today florida is feeling the punch after sandy left at least 2 -- 21 people dead. bill karins will have a complete forecast of the storm's path coming up in just a few minutes.

new poll numbers out in colorado and nevada. two swing states the president won in 2008 and is now fighting to hang on to. according to the latest marist poll, 48%. in nevada the president still clinging to a 3-point advantage. he's ahead 50% to 47%. a slight uptick for president obama from last month. this was conducted after the final debate. we're already seeing the impact of the final debate. and look what's happening in virginia. a new fox poll shows romney leading by two points. last month this same poll had barack obama up seven points. this is where it gets interesting. in the national poll, they have
5:33 am
romney up. and "the washington post" of likely voters have mitt romney taking a three-point lead. 50% to 47%. on monday the president was leading 49% to 48%. and on the economy, mitt romney now is holding a sizable nine-point lead. >> 160 miles separated the two candidates last night holding dualing rallies in the state of ohio. in the town of defiance, romney was welcomed to a packed football field full of 12,000 supporters. >> that's not all. you know who was there. the meat. >> i parentally he picked up an endorsement from meat loaf. >> that's huge. >> romney hit on a familiar theme. he's turned around from obama's 2008 campaign promising big change. >> this is a time when america faces big challenges. we have a big election. and we want a president who will
5:34 am
actually bring big changes and i will and he won't. >> given the big challenges we have, it's time for a big change. and paul ryan and i represent a big change for america. on november 7th, it's going to start getting better just from the news we voted for big change. >> we recognize this is a year with a big choice and the americans want to see big changes and i'm going to bring it to this country. >> i think it's safe to assume gary bussey safely in team obama's camp. >> in cleveland, this was the scene as air force one pulled right up to a rally where the president drew 12,000 supporters for the last stop on his 48-hour campaign blitz. >> even though my voice is getting kind of horse, i've still got a spring in my step.
5:35 am
because, because our cause is right. because we're fighting for the future. i've come to ohio today to ask you for your vote. >> earlier in the day during a stop in chicago, obama became the first president to ever cast an early ballot 12 days before the election. he will reach out for the youth vote sitting down for an interview on mtv. but it's a comment about his opponent that's also getting some buzz. it happened when the magazine's editor mentioned that his 6-year-old daughter was pulling for the president. that's so sweet. president obama replied, quote, well, you know, kids have good instincts, they look at the other guy and blank, i can tell.
5:36 am
we'll talk to the author of that "rolling stone" piece. and the presidential campaigns have surpassed an incredible benchmark. total spending for the campaign has now topped $2 billion. putting the race on track to be the costliest in american history. there's not a close second. according to federal elections data, the campaigns are pole doling out $29 every second on rallies, banners, and of course, advertising on your television set. president obama told brian williams last night that he sees a prolific spending as a real problem, even in his own campaign. >> the amount of money that is being spent in my campaign and mr. romney's campaign and the super pacs that are out there is ridiculous.
5:37 am
there's no reason why i believe we can interpret the constitution in a way that allows for some common sense restricti restrictions on the amount of money spent and the manner in which it's spent because for us to have folks writing $10 million checks undisclosed, having a huge sway in this election, and just the shear amount of waste that could be used more profitably in other areas doesn't make that much sense. so this is an issue that in a second term i'll raise. >> meanwhile, strong performances in the debates. mitt romney showing equally-strong fundraising. $112 million in the first two weeks of october. his fastest rate of collecting cash so far. president obama, the democratic party raised $90 million over the same period. >> president obama's coming off
5:38 am
a pair of endorsements. "the washington post." there's no way to know what mitt romney believes. rarely has a politician got so far with unimmutable belief. the president understands the urgency of the problems and is committed to solving them in a balanced way. that makes mr. o'bbama the superior choice. that came on the heels of colin powell's endorsement. something the president discussed. >> general powell is somebody who during the course of these four years has come in occasional occasionally, given me advice. he's somebody who, i think, people recognize as having just a steady breadth of knowledge both foreign and domestic. he's been terrific on all counts over the last four years.
5:39 am
so for him to provide a full endorsement like that means a lot. >> that endorsement did not come without controversy. senator mccain blasted the general for defending the president's feckless foreign policy. then these comments by john sununu, a co-chair of the romney campaign. >> when you take a look at colin paul, you have to wonder whether that's an endorsement based on issues or whether he has a slightly different for preferring president obama. >> what reason would that be? >> well, i think when you have somebody of your own race that you're proud of being president of the united states, i applaud colin for standing with him. >> later, the former governor tried to walk back those remarks reading, quote, colin paul is a friend and i respect the endorsement decision he made and i do not doubt it was based on anything but his support of the president's policies. >> okay. good morning, america.
5:40 am
still ahead on "way too early," a rough start for the tigers. mike barnacle, detroit is now down two games to nothing to the giants. full highlights from last night's game. that's coming up next. also looking at an east coast storm that's coming to the northeast. and we're all bracing for a direct hit from hurricane sandy. bill karins will give us his latest guess on where the path is going to be for the storm. and wherever bill tells you the storm is going to be, he's going to be off. so you're hoping it's coming through your hometown. if it is, don't worry about it. >> we'll be right back. my insurance rates are probably gonna double.
5:41 am
5:44 am
let's get a check on the weather with meteorologist bill karins. hurricane sandy looks like a real story. >> i would imagine monday and tuesday there will be a lot of people not going to work and school. probably all the way from virginia to southern new england. probably schools will be cancelled all through those regions. those are the membntal preparations you need to make now. in the next two days, you can do the physical preparations. by sunday the weather goes downhill in a hurry. it's already a nasty morning in florida. once the sun comes up, the waves
5:45 am
will be high in florida. you'll be getting periods of squally weather. it looks like a hybrid hurricane. what i mean is the northern side of the storm has the wet weather and the rain and the thunderstorms. then the dry air is wrapping around the southern portion. that's why we've been calling this not just a hurricane, but it's going to be a hybrid storm. almost like a nor'easter combined with a hurricane. but there's no snow associated with that storm. as far as where the storm is going to go, this is the new forecast from the national hurricane center. we care about the end of this. it's going to parallel the coast. the cone of uncertainty goes all the way down to virginia beach. it's shifted a little further south. it looks like guaranteed someone is going to get a direct hit. but the center is not going to be like a destructive major hurricane at landfall. it's anywhere north of the center that the coast will see
5:46 am
the worst of it. so regardless if it goes north or south, you'll be affected. right now, it's still d.c. to new york city, major population centers on the east coast, monday and tuesday of next week. >> bill, we'll be watching that. thanks very much. time for some sports now. game two of the world series between the giants and tigers. no score in the top of the second inning. young pulls one down the third baseline that will bounce around. prince field er all 275 pounds f him trying to score all the way from first, but he's out at the plate. the tigers don't like the call. but the replay shows he's out by a hair. scary moment in the second, a line drive right off the head. the ball bounces into the outfield for a hit. fister would stay in the game another five innings after that. he said after the game he's fine, just a bump on the head.
5:47 am
maybe that's what happened to you this morning. still scoreless in the sixth, bumgarner gets the batter swinging. bumgarner picked seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. gregor blank coget a hit. they win by a final of 2-0. they go up 2-0 on the tigers. the series moves to detroit tomorrow for game three. let's go to the nfl. the vikings hosting the buccaneers. the vikings cut into the lead with this 18-yard touchdown pass from christian ponder to percy harvin. the vikings trail by six after the extra point. but following a vikings turnover, josh freeman answers with a pass to mike williams.
5:48 am
the bucs go up 20-7. third quarter now, bucs up by ten. freeman hits doug martin on the screen pass. he weaves through traffic and outruns the defense for a 64-yard touchdown to put the bucs up 27-10. that's bad. this is closing minutes of the third quarter. things are getting chippy. the officials come over to break it up. but allen gets the worst of it and ends up with a bloody nose and the bucs win 36-17. >> i could never believe yesterday morning when you were saying that the bucs were actually going to cover the spread. you said they were going to win outright and pound the vikings in minnesota. i never saw it coming. >> i told you. weird. >> mika knows her stuff. mika the great.
5:49 am
let's talk about the most overrated players in football. >> yes. >> doesn't look good for new york jets. >> this is tim tebow we're talking about. added another award to his trophy case. this one isn't very prestigious. tebow was chosen as the most overrated player in the league. 34% gave the distinction to tebow who has yet to score a touchdown as a role player for the jets. but tebow can take comfort that mark sanchez is tied for second place on the list with 8% of the vote. sanchez ranks last in the league in passing yards. michael vick also made the list at number four with 4% of the vote. being called overrated by fellow players is nothing new for tebow or sanchez. a similar poll last year put
5:50 am
tebow in the top spot and sanchez in third. >> tebow was so lousy he took a pathetic and turned him around, took him to the playoffs and we remember that shocking victory in the playoffs. i think we have a lot of jealousy going on there. i deal with that every day. >> you can relate. >> from mika and everyone. >> coming up at the top of the hour, new polls have the presidential race neck and neck as we head into the final stretch. we'll break down the numbers with our "morning joe" team. we'll huddle around the water cooler when we come back. louis another chance at redemption after last time. find out which stories make the cut. "way too early" will be right back.

we told you at the top of the show that hurricane sandy is expected to make landfall early next week and could bring high winds and flooding to a large portion of the east coast. it was a little over a year ago that the same area was the target of hurricane irene which proved economically devastating for the region. if you want to sound smart, tell them because of the cost an estimated dlb 7 to $10 billion in damages according to "the new

york times." it puts it among the ten costliest storms in the u.s. >> they are going to be taking a trip to hawaii for the next one. >> everyone is taking a couple weeks off. >> they are going to convert some of the ice cream trucks into power line trucks. >> you stop it. you be nice. we're going to gather around the water cooler. this better not get messed up. this is apparently he's going to show us political news. he's going to bring it to the table today. >> you had a lot of smut last week. give us your best shot. >> mika will be happy. we have some political news. lenah dunnham, a great show. she's got a new campaign ad out online. she's got a not so subtle
5:55 am
metaphor for getting people to the polls. why don't we take a look at it. >> the the first time shouldn't be with just anybody. you want to do it with a great guy. a guy with beautiful, someone who cares about and understands women. a guy who cares whether you get health insurance. specifically whether you get birth control. do it with a guy who brought the troops out of iraq. my first time voting was amazing. it was this line in the sand. before i was a girl, now i was a woman. i went to the polling station and pulled back the curtain. i voted for barack obama. >> okay. i'm officially tired. i had nothing to do with that. what do you have next? >> katy is my firework. >> how is this political?
5:56 am
>> obama had a campaign rally in las vegas earlier in the week. she wore something i thought was extremely provocative but forward. >> provocative yet patriotic. >> she's got a ballot on her dress. it's form fitting and tight and it has president obama. >> let's take a closer look at this. >> e we should examine this. i'm like chuck todd with the map. >> what does it say? of it? >> she's wearing mary jane shoes. they are red and glittery. >> we have a lot more stories to get to. let's go on. i guess we can't. we're out of time. >> tell them they are fired. >> i didn't get to the brainy story. >> we're bringing the hard news. >> happy birthday. >> thank you very much.
